After watching BB2’s “Mark Zuckerberg: Inside Facebook” program the other night, it got me thinking; What makes a business person successful? I bet we’ve all heard that question answered by numerous “Successful” business people, by all of the “Dragons” and virtually all answering with the same list of key attributes we MUST possess in order to be successful in business. The question has been asked, and answered, a million times and still nothing satisfies.
I guess we’re asking the wrong question!
I believe the question that probes more deeply and demands a more insightful answers is
I believe if you are a person born for business you know about it, you know what you are and you do not have to see a check-list to be convinced. The thoughts and feelings and ideas that define us as business people come naturally. We’re not fearful of loosing out on an idea or opportunity because we know, deep down, that we have a limitless flow of idea’s (most rubbish but some brilliant) that stream from within us. We can always come up with an idea!
We know that we do not possess every skill we need to run and grow our businesses, but we also know that those skills can be acquire or purchased for a price.
We know that business people have to be determined and have a thick skin, we know to surround ourselves with good role models and to have a clear vision. We know all this instinctively but still we falter and fail and find ourselves in places we never intended to be and farther away from our dream than we had hoped.
So what are we missing? If we can tick most of the boxes for being a successful business person, there must be something else to address.
WHAT STOPS AN NATURAL BUSINESS PERSON FROM BEING SUCCESSFUL?
Seriously, I do not think I have had a clearer revelation than this, I believe it is so true and could explain why so many natural business people do not find the success they are looking for.
By not acting on the business ideas we have, by not motivating ourselves to act on our instincts we are condemned to being the owners of myriad businesses that never saw the light of day.
The potential was there, we had our natural business instinct and our business skills, we knew where to find the skills we lacked, we new we had a billion pound business waiting to happen. But we let it die through lack of action.
WHY DIDN’T WE ACT?
The two causes of lack of action are; lack of self confidence and or lack of passion. I honestly believe that these two barriers to success will prevail against any idea, big or small.
Deal with your confidence issues and only pursue ideas that, like Mark Zuckerberg, you are absolutely passionate about.
A business person can be successful and a business person can be unsuccessful. They are both business people. But one lacks action.
